This week I had midterms at school. I had often wondered how tests worked in culinary school, and after experiencing my first one, they are really neat! Of course you have the written portion, but the hands on practical is really fun/stressful. Four or five recipes from the quarter are selected that showcase skills and techniques learned so far and you use these for your midterm practical. On a normal lab day, you bake in groups, but for the midterm you complete the recipes on your own. I was really confident with the recipes, so for me, the midterm wasn't awful. However, the lattice work on my pie threw me for and a loop and while it turned out okay, it wasn't my best ( note to self, make sure that pie dough is ICE cold before you roll it out). The timing aspect was difficult as well, when you have twelve plus frantic students vying for equipment and oven space, you have to work fast to get your items baked and presented to the Chef on time!
Overall, I did really well and am happy to have my first practical test in culinary school under my belt. Below are my completed baked goods that I completed during my midterm!!
